Ministerial portfolios

Union Cabinet Minister of Coal since June 2024, in the Council of Ministers formed after the 2024 general election.

The Ministry of Coal determines policy and strategy for the exploration and development of India's coal and lignite reserves, runs the auction of coal blocks, and oversees coal public sector undertakings including Coal India Limited and NLC India Limited.

• India's coal production reached a record 1,047 million tonnes in FY 2024–25 — the first year above one billion tonnes.
• Released guidelines for the rejuvenation of traditional water bodies in coal and lignite mining regions.
• Reviewed coal-sector reforms at a Chintan Shivir in Gurugram in January 2026.

Union Cabinet Minister of Mines since June 2024, held concurrently with the Coal portfolio.

The Ministry of Mines is responsible for the survey, exploration and mining of minerals other than coal, lignite, petroleum, natural gas and atomic minerals. It administers the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957 and the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act, 2002, and oversees bodies including the Geological Survey of India and the Indian Bureau of Mines.

• Launched the first tranche of offshore mineral block auctions — 13 blocks in the Arabian Sea and Andaman Sea — on 28 November 2024.
• National Critical Mineral Mission approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2025 (₹16,300 crore outlay).
• Further tranches of critical and strategic mineral block auctions, including a seventh tranche in March 2026.

Union Cabinet Minister of Culture from 7 July 2021 to June 2024.

The Ministry of Culture is responsible for the preservation and promotion of India's tangible and intangible heritage, through bodies such as the Archaeological Survey of India, the national museums and the national academies of the arts.

Led the Ministry through India's 2023 G20 Presidency, whose culture track concluded with the G20 Culture Ministers' Meeting in Varanasi in August 2023 and the adoption of the "Kashi Culture Pathway".

Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs from 30 May 2019, his first ministerial appointment, until his elevation to Cabinet rank on 7 July 2021.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is responsible for internal security, centre–state relations, border management, disaster management and the administration of Union Territories. Ministers of State assist the Cabinet Minister across the Ministry's work.
