Gangapuram Kishan Reddy Union Minister of Coal and Mines · Member of Parliament, Secunderabad
Engineer by training, organiser by vocation, legislator for three Assembly terms and two Lok Sabha terms, and a member of the Union Council of Ministers since 2019.
Early life and education
Kishan Reddy was born in Timmapur village, in the Kandukur area of Ranga Reddy district on the southern edge of Hyderabad. His parents are G. Swamy Reddy and Andalamma. The Ministry of Coal's official profile lists his occupations as agriculturist and social worker.
He studied tool engineering at the Central Institute of Tool Design in Balanagar, Hyderabad — a technical training institution for tool design and manufacturing — and holds its diploma in tool engineering.
Entry into public life
His political work began in 1977, the year of the post-Emergency general election, as a youth leader in the Janata Party. When the Bharatiya Janata Party was founded in 1980 he joined it, and for the next twenty-five years his work centred on its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).
In the BJYM he held nearly every office in turn: state treasurer (1982–83), state secretary (1983–84), state president in Andhra Pradesh (1986–90), national secretary (1990–92), national vice-president (1992–94), national general secretary (1994–2001) and, from 2002 to 2005, national president.
The Legislative Assembly
He entered the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2004 from Himayatnagar in Hyderabad. After the 2008 delimitation he contested the new Amberpet constituency, winning it in 2009 and again in 2014 — by then as a member of the first Telangana Legislative Assembly. In the 2018 Assembly election he lost Amberpet by 1,016 votes.
Leading the state party
He was president of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh from March 2010 until the state's bifurcation in June 2014, and then the first president of the party's Telangana unit until April 2016. He returned to lead the Telangana unit a second time from July 2023 to June 2025, concurrently with his Cabinet responsibilities.
Parliament and the Union Government
In 2019 he was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from Secunderabad and on 30 May 2019 was sworn in as Minister of State in the Ministry of Home Affairs. In the reorganisation of 7 July 2021 he was elevated to Cabinet rank with charge of the Ministries of Culture, Tourism, and Development of North Eastern Region.
Re-elected from Secunderabad to the 18th Lok Sabha in 2024, he was given charge of the Ministries of Coal and of Mines in June 2024 — the portfolios he holds today.
